Top 5 Podcast Trends for 2023 (& Beyond)

Are you curious about the top trends for 2023?

As the popularity of podcasting continues to grow, it's important for podcasters to stay up-to-date on the latest trends and techniques in the industry. In 2023, we can expect to see a number of exciting developments in the world of podcasting, including the increased use of artificial intelligence and automation, a focus on monetization through various methods, interactive and immersive experiences, and a diversification of content and format.

From AI tools like ChatGPT to diverse perspectives and innovative storytelling techniques, 2023 is shaping up to be an exciting year for podcasting. Stay tuned for more on these and other trends in the world of audio content.

1. Podcast Trend #1: Increased use of AI and automation

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly sophisticated and is being used in a wide range of industries, including podcasting. In 2023, we can expect to see more podcasts using AI to analyze listener data, generate personalized recommendations, and create original content.

As technology continues to advance, we will see more use of AI and automation technology in the creation and production process of podcasts as well. This could include the use of AI to transcribe and edit audio, generate show notes and descriptions, or even assist with the creation of content.

One AI tool to pay attention to in specific is ChatGPT. It’s an incredibly powerful tool and resource, which I’ve linked in the episode notes for you.

2. Podcast Trend #2: Monetization

Podcasting has exploded in popularity over the past few years, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

In fact, 2023 will see even more investment in the industry, as advertisers continue to recognize the value of audio content and more and more people tune in to their favourite shows. When we think of monetization, most podcasters automatically think about sponsorship. It’s the first question I get and is the #1 way my clients want to monetize when they come to me.

The truth is? There are SO many ways to monetize a podcast. I believe we’ll continue to see advertising or sponsored content, but there may be an increase in the use of alternative monetization methods such as subscription models, like Patreon or memberships, or paid content behind a paywall.  This type of sponsorship is really important to consider because it’s a more sustainable, stable and reliable way for you to make money as a podcaster. This does come with the caveat that you will have to produce more consistent and high-quality content though for your subscribers.

3. Podcast Trend #3: Interactive and Immersive Experiences

Podcasts have traditionally been a standard and typical audio format, but in 2023 and beyond, we could see an increase in the use of interactive and immersive elements such as transcriptions, interactive audio experiences, or even virtual reality content. This could make podcasts more engaging and allow for a wider range of formats and styles.

Gone are the days of one-sided, monologue-style podcasts. In the new year, you can expect to see more collaborative and interactive shows that involve the audience and create a sense of community. Because as we know, creating that community is key when it comes to growing your audience.

This type of community could take the form of live recordings, Q&A sessions, or even audience-led discussions. It can also be tied in with your membership content, subscription-based content or paywall content. And while podcasts are primarily an audio medium, it’s no secret that many shows are using visual elements like video and images to supplement their content.

In fact, I always recommend my clients to film with video, that way they can use the video to create social media content for so many different platforms. So, video isn’t going anywhere, and In 2023, we can expect to see more podcasts using visual elements to engage their audience and enhance the listening experience.

4. Podcast Trend #4: Diversification of content and format

In 2023, we will see a lot of diversity in new ideas and new approaches from creators. Creators are always looking to push boundaries, explore new ideas, and diversify their content. We could see podcasts focused on specific niches or communities, podcasts that incorporate visual elements such as video or graphics, like I mentioned previously, or podcasts that use innovative storytelling techniques.

One of the biggest trends in podcasting for 2023 will be the push for greater diversity and representation within the industry. This includes not only the topics covered on podcasts, but also the people behind the mic. Expect to see more shows featuring diverse perspectives and voices.

It’s kind of like that saying “this is how we’ve always done it”...that doesn’t work anymore. We get to be creative and produce the show that we want – there is no right or wrong way, just your way. Expect new, expect creative, expect out of the box. And also know it’s okay if your content isn’t that. There is space for all content – my recommendation is to always create your content from your heart, and you will never go wrong.

5. Podcast Trend #5: The Rise of Niche and Micro Podcasts

Yes, popular and mainstream podcasts will always have their place, but in 2023, we will continue to see the rise of niche podcasts that cater to specific interests and communities. From true crime and sports to personal development and pop culture, there will be a podcast for just about every topic under the sun.

I know you may hear that and say ‘well, is there really space for my podcast?’ And I would say yes, absolutely. People want different perspectives, they want to grow and learn and hear information from all angles. It’s no longer one opinion that is correct, but the opportunity to learn and hear from so many different creators.

I also believe we will continue to see the trend of micro-podcasts. This is something I have been recommending to my clients, because in my opinion, audiences want that shorter, bite-sized content. Yes, creators like Joe Rogan have longer shows, but they have an established brand-presence of having a podcast that long.

And while long-form podcasts can be incredibly engaging, many people don't have the time to commit to a multi-hour series. In 2023, we can expect to see an increase in the number of micro-podcasts, which are shorter episodes that can be consumed more quickly. These shows are often focused on a specific topic or theme and can be a great way to get a quick fix of interesting content.

Closing Thoughts

Overall, it's an exciting time for podcasting, and there's no telling exactly what the future will bring as the industry is always changing and evolving.  But with these trends in mind, it's safe to say that 2023 is shaping up to be another big year for the industry, where we will see continued growth.
